The pace of learning in elementary schools in Florida feels far too rushed. Lessons are often broken into 15-minute blocks: 15 minutes for math, 15 minutes for science, 15 minutes for social studies, and 15 minutes for library time. By then, lunch, PE, and the rest of the day are nearly gone. It is hard to imagine how kids can keep up. And beyond academics, they also need to learn practical things like emotional regulation, life skills, and how to deal with their feelings. Those are the things I wish schools taught more often. I spent two years tutoring kids with special needs. I was shocked by how simply they passed from grade to grade; even with special help, the children were not ready.
