Edit my Brain

Daily writing prompt
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I have to admit that reading some of today’s responses to this question became the catalyst I needed to move forward. I’ve been agonizing for two days over edits I needed to make, completely stuck.

Don’t get stuck on perfection.

Killing my little darlings hasn’t been easy. I’m learning to trust myself, to allow myself to grow, and to accept that an “A” is good enough—it doesn’t always have to be an “A+.”

The advice I keep giving myself is simple:

Be patient. Step back. Breathe.

I have a tendency to want everything finished immediately—and perfectly. I’ll spend an entire night writing a story or lose an entire day painting. If it isn’t perfect the first time, I freeze.

Maybe what really needs editing isn’t my manuscript—it’s my thinking. Overthinking is a buzzkill. It keeps me from moving forward.

Patience is part of the creative process.

And, of course, another cup of coffee never hurts.

I really relate to this. One thing I’ve noticed is that when I chase an A+ while I’m in a creative block, I often end up with a C-. Sometimes the best thing to do is step away for a while. The mind eventually wanders into new territory, and ideas arrive naturally from outside the mental chamber I was trapped in. Ironically, taking a break often gets me much closer to the A+ than forcing it ever did.
