Hope, a Whistle, and a Prayer

You can drive yourself a little crazy trying to keep up with everything out there today.

AI. AI slop. SEO. Algorithms. Clicks. Views.

Stop! Can we take a breath?

What happened to good old-fashioned communication? A little honesty? A giggle or a laugh? Making something worthwhile and sharing it because you think someone else might enjoy it?

Now, before you finish creating, you’re already worrying about how anyone will find it. Did you use the right keywords? Is your title catchy enough? Have you pleased the mysterious algorithm?

I wanted to tell a story. Apparently, I also need a degree in digital marketing.

Between YouTube, Facebook, and Amazon, it can feel as though every road to visibility has a tollbooth. Buy an ad. Boost a post. Sponsor a listing. And if your budget is small, you wonder whether your work will ever make it out of the back row.

Never mind the care you put into it. Never mind that your book, artwork, or video might give someone a laugh, a moment of comfort, or a welcome escape.

Pay the piper, or at least that’s how it feels.

I understand that businesses need to make money. But as someone creating on a retirement budget, I find the constant pressure to spend exhausting. Every creative project seems to arrive with another marketing assignment attached.

Still, I’m not ready to stop. I enjoy the writing, the experimenting, and those wonderful moments when an idea finally comes together. And when someone tells me that something I made brightened their day, I remember why I started.

So I’ll keep learning what I can, taking breaks when I need them, and making things I hope people will enjoy.

With hope, a whistle, and a prayer.

And preferably without paying extra for the whistle.

Does anyone else miss simply sharing something without having to figure out an algorithm first?
