If my front door is hanging off its hinges and I hear a thud upstairs, I am not walking into the dark house to ask, “Hello? Is anybody there?” I am running a marathon in the opposite direction. Yet, for some reason, book and movie characters seem to think a home invader is just waiting to have a polite chat.
For those unfamiliar with the term, this is what we call a trope: a recurring theme, plot device, or shortcut that creators use over and over again. While some tropes can be fun, the “Investigating the Creepy Noise” trope is, without a doubt, the most annoying narrative shortcut in modern storytelling.
What drives me crazy about this setup is that it forces supposedly smart characters to act completely brainless just to move the plot forward. Think about the logic here: asking “Is anybody there?” implies that a serial killer, a burglar, or a supernatural entity is going to politely call back and reveal their position. In reality, a broken door isn’t an invitation to explore; it’s an active crime scene.
Real human instinct tells us to run like hell and ask questions later. When a story forces a character to ignore that basic survival drive, the illusion breaks. Instead of feeling scared for the character, the audience just ends up feeling annoyed at them.
What about you? What is the one movie or book trope that makes you want to throw your popcorn at the screen? Let me know in the comments below!
