If I had to get a tattoo right now, why do I have to? That is insane. I’ve managed 70 years without a tattoo just fine. At this point, if I had to, the tattoo artist would have to iron out my skin first; I’d probably protest because it would be under duress.
I have friends with tattoos; they are decorative and a personal choice I respect. I don’t know or remember any family members with tattoos; maybe that’s why I don’t personally care for having one. Perhaps it’s because of my interest in and studies of religion and philosophy in college. Orthodox or ascetic paths may advise against body modification to maintain physical purity or to focus the mind on the spiritual rather than the material self.
Or, it was instilled in me that tattoos don’t look good in job interviews.
If I had succumbed to peer pressure and gotten tattoos and piercings back in my punk rock phase, I’d look like a hot mess now.
I know, I know, that is judgmental and old-fashioned. And my personal philosophy is: you be you, and I be me.
