“You have to face the world with a knife between your teeth.”
My mother gave me this advice.
It sounds strange at first. My mother was no ordinary person; she was a fighter.
At 15, she decided to leave Cuba and head to the States to pursue her dream of becoming a journalist. The odds were stacked against her. Her family wanted her to become a nurse and stay in Cuba. They even hid her papers to keep her from leaving. Somehow, she managed to leave anyway and came to America. New York City was her destination, and she knew no one there or even how to get around. All she had was a promise of a job at “La Prensa,” the Spanish-language newspaper at the time.
What I gleaned from her advice was to fight for what you need and want. I always arm myself with information and do my research to prepare for any battle, especially legal ones. I prepare myself with information and rely on myself for courage and strength.
