The beauty of my golden age at 69 is that every day feels new. I remember, yet don’t remember, especially when it comes to movies and TV shows. It’s great! I can enjoy a movie as if it were the first time! Just kidding. I am not that bad. The movie I love seeing again and again is the romantic comedy Moonstruck (1987). This gem was directed by Norman Jewison and written by John Patrick Shanley, and it stars Cher, Nicholas Cage, Vincent Gardenia, Olympia Dukakis, and Danny Aiello. It’s a wonderful feel-good movie. I am not Italian, but while I’m watching this movie, I’m Italian! I start going around the house saying “Centare La Luna, La Bella Luna” with hand gestures. It makes me feel like I am part of the family, perhaps a cousin. Exactly the type of movie I can get lost in and relate to.
Another great Movie I’d love to see again, but doesn’t come up on TV often, is the original Gloria (1980), starring Gena Rowlands, Buck Henry, Julie Carmen, Tony Knesich, and directed by John Cassavetes. This movie kept me on the edge of my seat and emotionally involved. A similarly themed movie I like is Leon: The Professional (1994), directed and written by Luc Besson and starring Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, and Natalie Portman.
I see a pattern here. I must have been Italian in some lifetime. These are movies that I wish I could view again with completely fresh eyes.
