Ghosts and other things that go bump in the night. Growing up with two elderly great-aunts and their friends, you get the scoop on all sorts of ghostly stories. My aunts loved to tell me stories about their ghostly encounters in the old country of Colombia.
One day, we sat around the dining table enjoying our customary evening tea. They shared a story from their youth. They had moved to an old house in the city of Bogota. Although my aunts were still children they remember quite vividly what kept occurring in the house. At that time, they had a baby sister named Rosita. She was still too young to crawl or walk. Yet, she kept disappearing from her crib. They always found her crying under their parents’ bed. This occurred several times so the family got scared. They decided to move the bed to see what was going on under the bed. They found a few loose floor boards. They then discovered a buried treasure. A former owner of the house who had died in that same bed had left it. It was a few trinkets that apparently the owner was very much attached to. I asked them what happened to the treasure and they said they did not keep it. They took it to the church to be blessed and donated.
The Ghost Boy
Another story did not happen to them. It was told to them about a little ghost boy. He walked at night through the house and kept going into the kitchen. He put his hands in the kitchen drain. The little boy had died in the house not too long after. The family had accused and fired the housekeeper because the silverware kept disappearing, so they blamed the housekeeper. The family finally decided to open up the drain in the kitchen. They found several silver spoons caught in the sink trap. They realized that the little boy had been taking the silverware and putting it down the sink.
The Nun
A friend of a friend from Peru told me another ghost story. About a big house she had in Peru. The family was wealthy and had converted an old nunnery into their home. The place had a lot of history. One day, the family finished remodeling one of the larger rooms into a recreational room for the kids. Afterward, this girl said she was riding her bike. She saw from the outside of the house that the room’s curtains had all been drawn. A lot of noise was coming from inside the room. She approached the room’s window from the outside. Suddenly, the curtain moved. She saw a nun with a very evil eye looking right at her. She said that the room inside had been vandalized with cushions tossed everywhere.
Julie’s Ghost Story
My friend from Cayman Island shared some short stories with me. One was about meeting a ghost in her old aunt’s house. She said that as a child, she kept hearing a woman crying in the hallways. There was no one else in the house. One time she tried to enter one of the rooms. A sewing machine blocked the entry because it had been placed across the door. There was no other exit from the room and no one was inside.
I don’t know if these stories are true. I personally never met a ghost, but I did find them entertaining
