What’s your best tip for budget travel?

I’ve never traveled on a tight budget. I don’t get to travel often, so when I do, I like to enjoy myself. That doesn’t mean I go overboard by booking first class or anything. I still check Priceline and Trivago for cheaper flights and affordable, well-rated hotels. On my last trip to Panama, I stayed in a vacation condo in the heart of Casco Viejo, and it was wonderful. I give myself a daily budget of $200 for food and excursions. I also like to buy local handmade crafts, but I avoid collecting too many trinkets: a hat from Panama, a dress and leather sandals from Mexico, or maybe a T-shirt.
When I was younger, I traveled to New York City at least every other month to party for the weekend. My budget was much higher then. I still don’t know how my older brother managed to travel throughout Europe with a Eurail pass while staying in hostels. I couldn’t do it. I like my comfort.
And don’t even get me started on camping. I once stayed in a tent at Manatee Springs, Florida, and I swore I’d never do it again. I don’t like waiting in line to use the bathroom. Decent bathrooms are a must.
I’d rather travel less often and enjoy each trip than travel on a shoestring budget and be miserable.
